Fruit & Their Seasons
It is important to choose fruit based on the time of the year.
In this article we will dive into the reasons and we’ll categorize fruits per month.
What are the benefits of eating seasonal?
- First of all, most fruit, if naturally grown will ripe in a specific time of the year. Thus, knowing which fruit ripes at the time you’re at the store you’ll avoid unnecessary pesticides and unnatural growing methods.
- Then, there’s the nutritional value of in-season fruit. It is packed with more nutrients and is also much more flavoured. Fruit that’s not in-season is picked up unripe, and is cooled, stored, and processed in order to be maintained for a long time, which results in loss of nutrients and flavour. On the contrary, in-season fruit is sent directly from farm to store.
- In-season fruit costs less, since it is grown with less expenses, and there are no preservation costs.
- Transportation is also a big factor that also has a harmful environmental impact. In-season fruit is typically grown locally, which cuts off transportation costs and emissions. Out-of-season fruit is much more likely to come from a country with a different climate than ours.
