🥗 Beetroot has been thriving in my garden!
📰 In recent years, beetroot has received increased attention from the scientific community.
👨💻 A review on the latest research regarding the biological activities of nutritional composition in beetroot include:
🛡️ High antioxidant properties and antitumoral function. Beetroot prevents DNA damage, eliminates oxidative and nitrative stress, and reduces LDL. It has been found to inhibit cell proliferation and angiogenesis, while inducing cell apoptosis, and autophagy.
🏃 Improved physical performance. Beetroot naturally contains some compounds that are widely supplemented in the athletic community, such as nitrate, which decomposes into nitrite and subsequently converts to nitric oxide (NO). Thus, the intake of beetroot enhances athletic performance and attenuates muscle soreness, making beetroot a natural physical performance booster.
⚕️ Other activities of beetroot in the human body include:
- Liver and kidney protection (due to its antioxidant ingredients)
- Blood lipid and glucose metabolism
- Improving cognitive function (due to the nitric oxide)
- A study on beetroot effects on animals, showed improved survival rate of mice that were exposed to γ-ray and UV irradiation.
